The most important person you will ever need to know in life is YOU, After all, in the end, you’re the person you will need to rely on, depend on, trust in and who will always be there for you through thick and thin, if not you then who?

There is a fine balance in communicating with others, some look out for themselves and have no time for others, and some look out for others and have no time for themselves, but the Gentleman should find a healthy balance between self-care and chivalry.

Knowing oneself can be a complicated journey depending on your journey growing up, but no matter where you find yourself in life now, there are questions anyone can ask to help determine who you are and where you’re going.

  1. What would I like to achieve in my life before I die? (take time really think about this)
  2. Why do I want to achieve this thing? (understanding your own motives deepens your convictions)
  3. How important is it that I achieve this thing? (is it important enough to change your life?)
  4. What will it take for me to reach my goal? (If you are serious you will need a plan)

The more someone knows you the more potential control they have in your life, so in order for you to control yourself, you need to know yourself. No one should be able to know you or predict you better than you can. Here are a few habits worth keeping that could better assist you in knowing yourself.

Keeping a Thought Diary: Keeping a thought diary or thought journal is a good way to keep material you can look back and reflect on, you can record your thought processes and later see yourself through hindsight. Sometimes when your older self looks back at your younger self you can be either encouraged, inspired, or horrified by your thinking, but one thing is for sure, you will learn more about yourself.

Have a morning Ritual: Before you start each day have some quiet time to yourself, away from everyone and everything. Take a moment, look in the mirror and ask “Who am I”? as you step into each day be about your purpose, Be honest with yourself, be real with yourself, and get to know yourself a little better each day.

Being non-judgemental: Every person on this planet is fighting a private battle, but you mind your own business and fight your own battles. Don’t let yourself become angry at someone else’s opinion, your anger is a stench that the mentally weak like to expose and show off, not the Gentleman, he is self-controlled and alert, able to protect even his enemy if need be. Show others the kindness you would like shown to you.

Accept yourself: As you look in the mirror smile, you are enough. Everything you need is already in your heart and mind, and anything you lack is easily attained. Accept who you are, and love both your strengths and weaknesses, these things make you uniquely you. Accept those who accept you, and give freedom to those who reject you. 50% of this world will love you 50% will hate you, so know your place.

If you don’t know yourself you can end up in broken relationships, so pay attention, these broken relationships can be part of the process of helping you to know yourself more. Have you ever seen two people and thought “they would make a perfect couple,” and many years later they’re still together? You could only conclude “they would make a perfect couple” if you know both of them well, in the same way by knowing yourself well you can avoid relationships that will bring out the worst in you.

Often you have a ‘gut feeling’ about something, when you ignore this intuition you may end up kicking yourself, but the more you know yourself, the more you can trust yourself and your intuition. So take time to meditate on who you are, how you wish to be, what you desire to accomplish, and find the courage to be who you wish to be not what others desire you to be.
